Security of your server

You use a server to store, process and exchange data. This data can be all kinds of data. Depending on the type of data, your server is set up in a certain way. For example, there are web servers that host websites or web applications. Mail servers for handling e-mail. Database servers for making databases available. And much more! If you use an on-premise server, or a local server, you must always set up security yourself. That is why we help you in this article to make sure that you know how the security is done in this state.

Secure your network

The security of the network is at least as important as the security of the server. Hackers only need one entrance to bring an entire system down for your website. For example, if a workplace is hacked, hackers can proceed from there to the server. This is because the user of the workplace is connected to the server. Therefore, is it important to make sure you have a good firewall for your company network and that it is also configured correctly. A mistake in this can unintentionally open a network to the outside world.

Wifi is a common access point for hackers. Provide your WiFi with a good password and preferably separate networks for guests and devices that do not need to access the server.
Make sure that access to your network equipment is physically secured. If the switch or server is located in an open space in a multi-company building, this can be a risk.

Firewalls are important

A firewall for your company network may make sense, but it also makes sense to use a firewall on the devices (and especially the server itself) in your network. This could be a software firewall, but make sure it is enabled. The firewalls ensure that services (or ports) that are active on a server are not available from outside when they are not needed. A service that is not open – cannot be hacked!

Monitor your server

When a threat is not identified in time, a risk arises. That is why it is important to monitor the server security on a continuous basis. This way you can identify and tackle threats in time. Therefore it is also important to monitor your server because then you know for sure that if there is a risk you know when it appears.

Last but not least: The SSL-certificate

Do you have a service that is accessible from the internet? Make sure that the connection that is made with it is established securely, for example via a secure SSL connection. The SSL connection stands for Secure Sockets Layer and provides a secure connection between a client and server. If things cannot be made with a secure connection, a VPN tunnel is desirable. This provides a secure connection to your company network.

If a website or web application is available on your server, it is advisable to secure it with an SSL certificate. You can recognize this by the url, because it says https instead of http. An SSL certificate is a safe idea for both the website visitor and the website administrator. In addition, search engines also attach great value to it, and you will therefore be higher in Google, for example.
